Amabile is an enterprising classical music ensemble based on a clarinet, cello and piano trio,  made up of prize-winning and much-recorded artists. The group has established a reputation for imaginative programming and dynamic performances. As well as performing much loved classics, Amabile highlights some surprisingly neglected composers, and also enjoys expanding the repertoire with newly commissioned music.

The name Amabile is derived from the musical instruction notably used by Brahms, meaning ‘friendly’ or ‘amiably’, and reflects the coming together of these three world-class musicians into this most friendly and amiable chamber ensemble.

  • Yesterday I had the privilege of attending a recital by Amabile. It was a wonderful experience. All members of the group are experienced ensemble and orchestral players. Their unobtrusive virtuosity and excellent ensemble was never in doubt and we could see as well as hear their obvious enjoyment of both the music and playing together… What joy!
  • The opening Allegro had a lovely flow here and a delicate ending. In the heat haze conjured by the Adagio, the cello of Nicola Tait Baxter came into its own, entwined closely with Lesley Schatzberger’s idiomatic clarinet. Paul Nicholson’s piano neatly underpinned the lilting Viennese waltz that preceded a finale of crisp rhythms tinged with a touch of aggression.

  • This Trio was a delight to have at our centre. We had the pleasure of meeting three compatible musicians who seemed to have already been good friends for some time. The music was a perfect combination for us on this occasion. And we are hopeful that Amabile will return to our venue soon.
